More or less 10,000 people, composed of athletes, coaches, chaperones, honorary and delegation officials from different parts of Eastern Visayas, are expected to flood the streets of Ormoc City with the up-and-coming kickoff of the EVRAA Meet 2019. #theCityOfBeautifulPeople will host this year’s event.
During the second sports board meeting on Feb. 4, 2019, Congresswoman Lucy Marie Torres-Gomez shared that there is “a double pressure” hosting for Ormoc City. The wife of Mayor Richard Gomez said that the accountability of hosting the event and defending the city’s title as the over-all champion during the EVRAA Meet 2018 in Calbayog City are two of the primary concerns of the local government unit in the imminent EVRAA Meet 2019.
Despite this, the lady solon stated that the city is doing its best in giving training to all athletes of different sports events for Ormoc City in an attempt to defend its championship title as the local government unit works on the rehabilitation and construction of major sports facilities needed for the forthcoming sports event.
Congresswoman Lucy said that all the preparations being done for this major sports event in the region reflects how passionate Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez is for sports. The actress-politician even said that sports could, definitely, help young people develop self-discipline, camaraderie, and sportsmanship, which are some essential traits needed when they become the new leaders of the country.
Since Ormoc City is hosting this year’s meet, Mayor Richard Gomez made sure that the city’s sports facilities would not disappoint. As a matter of fact, the actor-politician revealed that, while there are a series of rehabilitation going on the old and unstable sports facilities like the basketball courts and the Olympic-sized swimming pool in New Ormoc City National High School, the local government unit of Ormoc has also focused on creating new and state-of-the-art structures and facilities intended for EVRAA Meet 2019.
Mayor Richard divulged that the newly-finished grandstand erected at the Ormoc City Sports Complex, alone, is worth 45 million pesos. He even revealed that the city spent, approximately, 160 million pesos in preparation for the EVRAA Meet 2019.
Based on the exclusive documents News Everyday obtained from local broadcast journalist Kimberly Urboda, the total number of delegations for the EVRAA Meet 2019 is 8,871 while another 645 individuals would act as technical officials. The province of Biliran (821) has the highest number of delegates this year, followed by Ormoc City (783), Northern Samar (750), Calbayog City (723), and Baybay City (720), respectively.
All delegates from the cities of Maasin, Borongan, and Calbayog are staying in the New Ormoc City National High School. On the other hand, participants from Ormoc City, Tacloban City, Baybay City, and Catbalogan City are being housed in Ormoc City Central School, Dolores National High School, Linao National High School, and Ipil National High School, respectively.
The opening ceremony of the EVRAA Meet 2019 will happen on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. at the Ormoc City Sports Complex. It will be followed by the Mayor’s Night at 7 p.m. in the Ormoc City Superdome.
On Monday, April 8, the Mr. and Ms. DepEd Eastern Visayas will take place in Ormoc City Superdome at 6 p.m. For the EVRAA Meet 2019, Ormoc City will host two Cultural Nights at the Ormoc City Plaza, which will happen on April 9 and April 11. Lastly, the closing ceremony and fellowship night will take place on April 12 at the Ormoc City Sports Complex.
Initially, the athletic meet was scheduled to take place on March 3 to 8. However, to ensure the comfort, security, and convenience of the delegates, the Ormoc City Government decided to postpone and reschedule it to April 7 to 12. Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez, previously, revealed that the delay would pave the way for the completion of the rehabilitation and constructions of various sports facilities in the city.
The city legislative council even passed a resolution approving the postponement of the EVRAA Meet 2019, citing that “the delays of the facilities were brought about by frequent days of continuous heavy rains during the rainy season.”
Ormoc City defeated Leyte, which ruled the athletic meet in the past decade, during the February 2018 games in Calbayog City. Now, it remains to be seen if the “richest” and “safest” city in the region will be able to reclaim its title this year.
