Kananga Mayor Matt Torres Forms ‘Taskforce Matt’ To Implement Anti-road Obstruction Operations

Kananga Mayor Manuel Vincent “Matt” Torres issued an Executive Order establishing a task force to implement transportation and traffic regulations within the municipality. Named as “Taskforce Matt,” it aims to address the town’s problem on traffic due to illegal parking and other unlawful obstructions along public roads and highways.

Mayor Matt created “Taskforce Matt” after the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año ordered all local government units across the country, thru the Memorandum Circular No. 2019-121, to reclaim all public rounds and eradicate anything that impedes or prevents the passage of pedestrians and vehicles, such as illegally parked automobiles, equipment, construction materials, and all kinds of illegal structures including stalls, billboards, fences, garbage receptacles, railings, advertisements, signages, canopies, sheds, shops, stores, shanties, houses, buildings and the like. To recall, this was the marching orders of President Rodrigo Duterte to the DILG during his fourth State of the National Address (SONA) on July 22.

“This [cleanup program] is long overdue. We no longer have alibis not to do it when it is the President’s order,” Secretary Año said to all Metro Manila Mayors on July 29. “There is no room for compromise on this issue. It’s either black or white. I will not hesitate to submit to the President the names of stubborn local chief executives. If it all leads to a suspension, so be it. It is for the benefit of the people anyway,” he went on.

The memorandum stated that all local officials are urged to exercise their powers needed to get back all public roads that are being used for private ends and get rid of illegal structures and constructions. The local government units are, also, responsible for the rehabilitation of all regained public roads, which include putting street lights and street names, among others.

Mayor Matt Torres, who is taking President Duterte’s words to heart, asked for the cooperation of all Kanangahanons for the improvement of the bustling municipality of Kananga.
