Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc., opened its first compact mall in Baybay, Leyte, on Tuesday, July 30. Present during the blessing and official launch of Metro Baybay were Baybay City Mayor Jose Carlos L. Cari, MRSGI Chairman and CEO Frank S. Gaisano, MRSGI President and COO Manuel Alberto, former mayor Carmen L. Cari, and Hon. Robert Cayone, who is the barangay chairman of Zone 15, where the two-story shopping center is erected.
Metro Baybay, for starters, houses the Metro Department Store and Metro Supermarket. Here, shoppers can expect a wide assortment of grocery items, basic essentials, fresh and quality products at reasonable prices. Other mall tenants and dining outlets are said to open in the coming months, which include Kid’s Playhouse, Mango Magic, Ribshack, Turks, Island Tea, Potato Corner, Dunkin’ Donuts, Cellcom World Communications, Zagu, Cybertech, Western Union, and an Oppo Concept Store among others.
The city government of Baybay thru former Mayor Carmen Cari and the officials of the Metro Retail Stores Group signed a memorandum of agreement sometime in 2016. The company, reportedly, paid P600,000 as security payment at the city treasurer’s office and made an advance payment of P12 million for the land rental. The Metro Baybay building is said to be occupying a one-hectare area of the 9.5-hectare reclamation project adjacent to the Baybay City Public Market. “This will not only give income to the city but will also address [the] unemployment problem in Baybay because this will generate jobs,” former mayor Carmen Cari said at the time.
The opening of Metro Baybay is expected to strengthen the business foothold of the Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc. in Region 8. At the moment, MRSGI operates a total of 51 malls in the Visayas region. It, also, has outlets in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and South Luzon, with three store formats: a department store, a supermarket, and a hypermarket. MRSGI is set to open another store in Tacloban City and plans to put up another one in Ormoc City.
Metro Baybay is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
