In a Facebook post, local broadcast journalist Kimberly Urboda shared that the new Ormoc City Airport passenger terminal will be inaugurated very soon. Though there is no official date unveiled, the photos suggested that the improved airfield is almost ready for operations. The government has been focusing on improving various infrastructures as a part of the “Build, Build, Build” program.

Initiated by President Rodrigo Duterte, the above-mentioned program aims to accelerate infrastructure spending and develop industries that will yield robust growth, create jobs and improve the lives of Filipinos. Besides the soon-to-be-inaugurated Ormoc City Airport, other major infrastructure projects under the “Build, Build, Build” program, also, include the 1,500-hectare industrial park in Clark, Pampanga, the expanded Clark International Airport, the North-South railway projects connecting Los Banos, Laguna and Tutuban, Manila City, and the Subic-Clark Railway.

In August 2017, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) committed a total of P218 million for the improvement of the Ormoc City Airport to accommodate bigger commercial aircraft. DOTr Undersecretary Manuel Antonio, previously, shared that the airfield could accommodate A320 family aircraft. However, he noted that the runway needs some widening at the ends to serve as turnaround pads for the bigger aircraft.

For starters, the Ormoc City Airport has a runway length of 1,860 meters. It is also one of the three airports in Leyte. Some P85 million was earmarked for the early stages of the rehabilitation while another P128 million was allotted for its continued development.

Congresswoman Lucy Marie Torres-Gomez praised President Duterte, DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade and the national government for their speedy response attitude she saw when the lady solon requested for the Ormoc City Airport’s repair. The wife of Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez, previously, divulged that the damaged airport terminal building was unkempt even with her relentless appeal to the previous administration to have it fixed.
