Ormoc City Remains COVID-Free, Appeals Lifting Of GCQ

Actor-turned-politician Richard Gomez is proud to announce that Ormoc City remains free from the deadly coronavirus. In an interview with ANC, Gomez expressed his joy over the fact that early precautionary measures the local government implemented proved to be working very well.

“We closed our borders very early on. We started closing our border on March 13. It’s been over a month already since the time we closed it. We’ve been very strict in allowing people to enter Ormoc City. I think this infection will not end anytime soon. There’s a very clear indication that we will continue our closing down of border control and our quarantine control in Ormoc City,” the husband of Congresswoman Lucy Marie Torres-Gomez said.

Why Ormoc City stopped receiving patients with respiratory diseases from neighboring areas

Mayor Gomez, also, shared why he did not allow the entry of patients from nearby municipalities amid the lockdown. The former athlete said he was just trying to protect Ormocanons from the perils posed by the COVID-19 after close by provinces declared deaths due to the fatal and infectious disease.

“We have five major borders in Ormoc City. In all of those border areas, we’ve been very strict. The PNP and the Philippine Army have been there 24/7 including medical staff, nurses. We only allow entry in Ormoc City if people need emergency operations if they’ll be giving birth. For those patients complaining of respiratory ailments, they need to get a doctor’s clearance from our City Health Office,” he furthered.

In a separate interview, Mayor Richard Gomez revealed that hospitals in Ormoc City stopped catering to patients with respiratory ailments because of the limited number of doctors and other medical practitioners.

“Doctors here would not want to accept any more patients with respiratory ailments simply because there are very few hospitals in Ormoc City.  We have one Ormoc District Hospital. The governor took away all the doctors there to be deployed to [different parts of] Leyte. I’m very much concerned because there are a few doctors here. In Manila, a lot of doctors are dying. If that will happen to us then we will run out of doctors,” he stated.

Ormoc City appeals lifting of General Community Quarantine

On Tuesday (May 12), Mayor Richard Gomez met with Ormoc City Vice Mayor Toto Locsin and some members of the city council to discuss the new guidelines released by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF). Gomez, as per the City Government of Ormoc Facebook page, reportedly, asked the council to pass a resolution appealing the lifting of the GCQ status in #theCityOfBeautifulPeople. “In the new guidelines we will ask for a reconsideration from the regional IATF but for now we will still be on status quo,” he said.

Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla told Manila Bulletin, Wednesday (May 13), that the IATF decided to extend the GCQ in the province until May 31. He divulged that more than 500 Leyteños need to complete the ongoing mass testing before the province could terminate its current status.

As of Thursday (May 14), Ormoc City’s health office is tracking seven suspected cases of COVID-19 while 25 persons are, currently, under monitoring (PUM).
