Shylaer Sizzling Steak Opens In SM Center Ormoc



Nestled in the depths of SM Center Ormoc is a gem of a store called Shylaer Sizzling Steak. Owned and operated by Tacloban-based couple Edsel and Gellice Barreda, this hole in the wall has a fairly straightforward approach to grilled and sizzling dishes.

This new diner in town prides its signature sizzling pork sisig that’s made up of tender, shredded pig meat. The generous drizzles give a sweetish taste while the egg adds bulk and balances the strong taste of onions.

Feel free to devour the crispy sorcery as the spices simmer underneath. Maybe, also, get a glass of iced tea for good measure.

Other must-try dishes include Kinilaw na Tangigue, Baked Tahong, Lechon Kare-Kare, Beef Racu, and Hot Shrimp Salad. Shylaer Sizzling Steak also serves desserts such as Black Sambo, Banana Split, Fruit Salad, Mango Bango, Buko Pandan, Mango Float and Leche Flan.

Humble Beginnings

Gellice revealed that reviving their brand, following the massive devastation caused by Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, was their biggest challenge. She almost gave up to her dreams and considered living in Manila for good. But, her husband convinced her to push their luck again.

A few months later, the Barreda couple re-opened their humble diner in Brgy. Marasbaras to cater fellow Taclobanons as they continue rebuilding their lives after the infamous super typhoon smashed the city, destroyed more than a million homes, and killed 6,000 people.

In 2015, Edsel and Gellice opened their diner’s first mall-based outlet in SaveMore Tacloban and named it Shylaer Sizzling Steak, which is derived from the names of her four children, namely: Shyla, Shyler, Shyle, and Shyleck. With the growing popularity of their topnotch food and services, the couple decided to expand and open new branches in Robinsons Place Tacloban in 2017 and SM Center Ormoc in 2019.

Asked about how she and her husband were able to survive all the difficulties life throwed at them, Gellice said hard work and dedication are the recipe to success. She, proudly, added that they never borrowed money from the bank to fund their operations and expansions. The mom of four, also, revealed that she dreams of having a fourth branch of Shylaer Sizzling Steak in the future.

Shylear Sizzling Steak is open daily, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the second level of  SM Center Ormoc.
